Phase 1: Nashville, TN Vignette

Organize for Success/Partnership Development

On December 31, 2002, Mayor Bill Purcell of Nashville, TN, announced the Healthy Nashville 2010 initiative to assess the city's health status and develop plans to improve the community's health. Its goals are to involve the entire community in prioritizing strategic health issues and finding the resources to address them. Improved quality of life for those who live, work, play, worship, or learn in Nashville is the overarching vision for the future.

To begin the process of improvement, the mayor created, by executive order, the Healthy Nashville Leadership Council. The 18-member council reflects the expertise needed to guide the diverse city.

Nashville is one of nine demonstration sites selected by the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) to implement the Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships (MAPP) model as the framework for Healthy Nashville 2010.

In concert with the mayor's office, Healthy Nashville 2010 is holding Healthy Nashville Events to improve the city's health, quality of life, and community involvement. Examples of Healthy Nashville Events include the following:

  • Music City Marathon
  • Walk from Obesity
  • Oral Cancer Screening Day
  • Celebrating Healthy Neighborhoods Conference
  • Child Mental Health Celebration

Healthy Nashville 2010 has begun community dialogues called Nashville Talks Health. Topics focus on health issues, the ideal picture of a healthy Nashville in 2010, and forces of change that could affect the health of Nashville.
