Story from the Field

Name of Health Department/Agency: Medical Reserve Corps of Southwest Colorado
State: CO
Date Added: 07/23/2010
Themes: Vaccine Supply and Distribution
Issue Summary: Limited public health medical personnel for H1N1 response
Description of Issue(s):

During the H1N1 pandemic, San Juan Basin Public Health was faced with a severe shortage of personnel to conduct SNS distributions and the H1N1 vaccination program in the Southwest Colorado Region.

Actions taken to address the issue(s): SJB Public Health partnered with the Medical Reserve Corps Southwest Colarado (MRCSWC) to staff SNS distributions in the region and staff the H1N1 vaccination clinics in La Plata County with RNs, MDs, EMTs and key support personnel.
Outcomes that resulted from actions taken: Under the direction of the SJBPH, the MRCSWC completed SNS distributions to SW Colorado agencies and tribal units. MRCSWC staffed 22 vaccination clinics and administered over 6500 vaccine doses over a three month period. As a result the H1N1 program was completed on schedule. This partnership created a very smooth and efficient process and established a close relationship between public health and the MRC that will serve our area for years to come.
