In May 2008, the local health departments receiving technical assistance, the demonstration sites, and the workgroup of NACCHO’s Health and Disability Project convened in DC. The group developed a work plan which continues linking health and disabilities to chronic disease prevention, environmental health, and preparedness.
The objectives of the meeting included:
- Sharing updates about work occurring in the demonstration and technical assistance sites;
- Exploring the link between disability-specific health promotion and health promotion organized by health conditions and topical areas;
- Reflecting on how the paradigms that currently guide health promotion for people with disabilities may differ from paradigms that guide health promotion with other communities; and
- Examining the implications of lessons learned promoting health with other communities for the disability and health work NACCHO does with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local health departments.
