Madison County – London City Health District (OH)

Approximately 16% of Madison County-London City Health District has a disability.  The Madison County-London City Health District and its community partners conducted a pilot project to promote the health and well-being of people with disabilities funded by the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO).

Project Activities:

Madison County-London City Health District is working with the Healthy Lifestyles curriculum. After learning the curriculum, members of Madison County are training other trainers and then implementing Healthy Lifestyles workshops and ongoing support meetings for older adults and people with disabilities.

Technical Assistance Project:

NACCHO is currently offering technical assistance support to local health departments to improve their capacity to develop or enhance health promotion programs for people living with disabilities through coordination of existing health department and community services.

Madison County-London City Health District is providing technical assistance to Union County Health Department, OH.  For more information, visit: Union County Health Department.

Project Update:

Union County went to the Healthy Lifestyles training  in NY and thinks the curriculum would work well with high school aged children. The Mentor and TA Sites met on Nov. 30, 2009 and discussed implementing the curriculum in the school system and at the YMCA. The school system was open to incorporating the curriculum  into the school day; however, the Mentor and TA Sites decided to bring the curriculum to the YMCA instead. They will teach the Healthy Lifestyles Curriculum to high school students once or twice a week after school, beginning in January 2010. Students to participate in the classes will be recruited through Special Olympics games when parents and students are present. High school credits toward graduation will be given to students that complete the Healthy Lifestyles Program.
