Story from the Field

Name of Health Department/Agency: Nash County Health Department
State: NC
Date Added: 01/14/2010
Themes: Communications - General H1N1,Vaccine Supply and Distribution
Issue Summary: Public notification of health department vaccine clinic
Description of Issue(s):

Notifying public of vaccine clinics in an effort to vaccinate as many residents as possible.

Actions taken to address the issue(s): We have used our CodeRed system (a reverse 911 system) to announce our walk in clinics that we are holding at the Ag center. Here is the message: The Nash County Health Department will be holding an H1N1 vaccination clinic on Wednesday, December 9th, from 2 to 7 PM at the Nash County Agricultural Center, located at 1006 Eastern Avenue in Nashville. This H1N1 clinic is open to the general public for ages 6 months and up. H1N1 injectable and nasal vaccine will be available. This vaccine is being offered free of charge. Please call 459-9819 or check our website for more information.
Outcomes that resulted from actions taken: I have surveyed people as they come through to find out how they found out about our clinic and 90% say that it was from the phone call. This has been the most successful method of communicating with the public. Many people are presenting and have never received a seasonal flu shot. When asked why they chose to get H1N1, they said that the phone call really made them think about getting it. We had 615 people turn out for the clinic and have had as many as 1300 come and this is due to the CodeRed call.
