Story from the Field

Name of Health Department/Agency: Kane County Health Department
State: OH
Date Added: 12/21/2009
Themes: Vaccine Supply and Distribution
Issue Summary: National and Regional Pharmacy Chain Participation in H1N1 Vaccine Campaign in IL
Description of Issue(s): In Illinois retail pharmacies have not received any vaccine directly from the state yet.
Actions taken to address the issue(s): About 2 weeks ago, we at the county level provided an initial supply to the Walgreens, Kmart, Dominick's, etc. pharmacies to get them started until they received vaccine from the state. We offered ths same to Target but have had difficulty connecting with the appropriate contact there.
Outcomes that resulted from actions taken: For all the chains except Target, it has gone very well. We began providing vaccine to them before Illinois went beyond the ACIP priority groups so we made it clear that they too had to stick to the priority groups and as far as we know, they did. They moved through the vaccine quickly and we will be offering more vaccine to them today. I don't know how soon they'll be receiving major shipments from the state. The only challenge we've really had has been connecting with the right person for Target. The other pharmacies have had a local contact we've worked through.
