Story from the Field

Name of Health Department/Agency: Tri-County Health Department
State: CO
Date Added: 11/21/2009
Themes: Vaccine Planning and Administration
Issue Summary: Inadequate vaccine
Description of Issue(s): Not enough vaccine to serve all members of the priority populations. Mass clinics scheduled, and some later cancelled for vaccine provision. Surrounding counties not offering mass clinics.
Actions taken to address the issue(s): We were forced to limit our mass clinics to residents of our own counties (hard to do, and takes more staff) to avoid being overwhelmed or running out of vaccine. We put that information on our website and on our state flu clinic finder website. At the front of the line at each clinic that information is handed out. We have come up with a variety of exceptions to allow us to serve as many Tier 1 clients as possible.
Outcomes that resulted from actions taken: Clinics ahve gone smoothly and we have been able to implement our mass vaccination plan and provide immunizations in our communties. Communication and negotiation between counties has increased.
