Embarking on an Outbreak Investigation


This presentation by Michelle Torok, MPH, gives you an overview of outbreak investigation, the anatomy and physiology of an Outbreak Team and embarking on an outbreak investigation.

Target Audience:

These learning modules are applicable to all public health, medical, veterinary, pharmacy, emergency management, hospital and other professionals interested in public health preparedness. These modules are created by faculty and guest lecturers at the UNC-CH School of Public Health and are equivalent to graduate level content.

  • Describe factors that may contribute to a decision to investigate.
  • Understand management strategies during an outbreak investigation.
  • Learn the different team member roles of an Outbreak Team.

  • Understand the importance of verifying case reports.
  • Learn methods to determine if an outbreak investigation is necessary.
  • Create and use case definitions.
