Using Local Health Leadership to Prevent Secondhand Smoke and Promote Health Equity in Multi-Unit Housing

Sharing Session (60 minutes)
Friday, Jul 16
10:15 AM - 11:15 AM
Room 15
Conference Track:
Marketing to Improve Public Health Perception

Tobacco still remains the number one cause of preventable death and disease. Even though communities and states nationwide have made strong strides in implementing clean indoor air policies, most of these laws fail to protect millions of individuals from secondhand smoke in their homes. This is especially true for persons living in multi-unit housing such as apartments or condominiums. Local health officials, board of health members, and other public health professionals can benefit from this session by learning how local leadership has worked on the smoke-free multi-unit housing initiative to have housing complexes voluntarily provide smoke-free units to interested leases or owners.
