Health Impact Assessment: Helping Health Agencies Reach across Sectors to Solve Today?s Public Health Challenges

Sharing Session (90 minutes)
Friday, Jul 16
8:00 AM - 9:30 AM
Room 16
Conference Track:
Best Practices and Their Impact on the Six Winnable Battles

To curtail the rising tide of chronic disease and create safe, thriving communities, health needs to be regularly factored into public decision-making. Health impact assessments (HIAs) are a useful tool for integrating health into the programmatic and policy conversations occurring in other sectors. This session will inform attendees about HIAs and provide concrete examples of how local public health agencies can conduct successful HIAs in their communities. It will begin with an overview of HIA and provide case studies that illustrate how local health departments can use the HIA process. Next, it will provide an overview of tools and resources available to help screen HIA projects and get started using HIAs. The session will conclude with a detailed example of a Wisconsin training session.
