Highlights from ASTHO-NACCHO 2008!

The ASTHO-NACCHO 2008 Joint Conference—the year''s largest gathering of state and local health officials—drew 1,200 enthusiastic attendees to Sacramento, California! NACCHO and ASTHO members as well as a variety of public health partners convened September 9 -12 at the Sacramento Convention Center to focus on the theme of "Becoming the Healthiest Nation in a Healthier World." ASTHO-NACCHO 2008 included over 50 concurrent sessions, more than 70 poster presentations, 100+ exhibit hall displays, and numerous meetings, receptions, and networking opportunities. The conference also included the following memorable highlights:

  • Opening General Session on Wednesday, September 10, entitled "What Do Consumers Expect and Can Public Health Meet Those Expectations?": This session kicked off ASTHO-NACCHO 2008 featuring lively and insightful discussions with consumer poll experts and governmental public health thought leaders. Featured speakers were Robert J. Blendon, PhD, Harvard School of Public Health; Kevin McConville, The Gallup Organization; Julie L. Gerberding, MD, MPH, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; David N. Sundwall, MD, ASTHO Immediate President; and Robert M. Pestronk, MPH, NACCHO Immediate Past President.

  • General Session on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 10, with an inspiring keynote address by Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, MD, MBA, President and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, on what public health can do to help us become the healthiest nation in a healthier world.

  • General Session on the morning of Thursday, September 11, with a distinguished panel of state and local health officials who provided passionate, real-world responses to the question,"What is the Future of Health in the United States?" Panelists included Terry Allan, RS, MPH, Cuyahoga County (OH) Board of Health; Mary C. Selecky, Washington State Department of Health; Judy Monroe, MD, Indiana State Department of Health; and Tony Iton, MD, JD, MPH, Alameda County (CA) Public Health Department. The session was moderated by the engaging Sacramento-based physician and broadcast journalist, Tom Hopkins, MD.

  • General Session on the morning of Friday, September 12, which had as its timely topic, "How Will You Protect Your At-Risk Populations During a Pandemic?" Featured presenters were John Auerbach, MBA, Commissioner, Massachusetts Department of Public Health; and Carina Elsenboss, MS, Advance Practice Center Program Manager, Public Health – Seattle and King County (WA).

  • On Friday, September 12''s Closing General Session, keynote speaker Reed V. Tuckson, MD, Executive Vice President and Chief of Medical Affairs, United Health Group, concluded ASTHO-NACCHO 2008 by issuing a rousing "call to action" to attendees on what they can do to help our country become the healthiest nation in the world.
