President's Corner

Meet President Dr. Swannie Jett

Swannie Jett, DrPH, MSc, was appointed by the State of Florida and Seminole County Board of County Commissioners as the Health Officer for the Florida Department of Health in Seminole County on April 4, 2013. Previously, he was Health Officer of Bullitt County Health Department in Kentucky.

Dr. Jett is passionate about bettering the health of Seminole County by building strong partnerships with community organizations. He is dedicated to strengthening the infrastructure of the county health department by improving funding streams and workforce competencies. 

Currently, Dr. Jett is Major in the Air Force National Guard where his latest assignment was in Senegal, Africa assisting with the Ebola Virus Outbreak. Dr. Jett is a national leader in public health as President of the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO). He is a member of Leadership Seminole Class 23, American Public Health Association, and Beta Gamma of the Delta Omega Public Health Society. 

In 2011, he completed the National Public Health Leadership Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill the Kentucky Public Health Leadership Institute. He received the Bronze Star Medal from serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2006-2008. Dr. Jett received a Mayor's Citation in 2005 from the Mayor of Louisville, Kentucky for his distinguished service and contribution to the betterment of the city and its people. 

He completed a year as a Survive and Thrive Fellow with NACCHO which helps Health Officials survive and thrive in their role and assure the conditions that promote health and equity, combat disease and improve the quality and length of all lives. 

Dr. Jett holds a Doctorate of Public Health with emphasis in Preventive Medicine from the University of Kentucky, Master of Science degree from the University of Tennessee in Bio-Systems Engineering, and Bachelors of Science in Agricultural Statistics from Tennessee State University.

Video: Amoeba Summit 2015

NACCHO President Dr. Swannie Jett presented at the Amoeba Summit 2015 in Orlando, FL. Clinicians, health specialists, and public health professionals came together at the summit to raise awareness and spark a national conversation about the risks, diagnosis, treatment, and research associated with Naegleria fowleri amoeba. DrJett1NACCHO President Represents Local Health Departments in Washington

On September 1, NACCHO President Dr. Swannie Jett, Health Officer, Florida Department of Health in Seminole County, came to Washington to meet with staff at the White House Office of Management and Budget as well as staff to Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Representative G.K. Butterfield (D-NC), Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. Dr. Jett spoke about the need for building sustained capacity in local health departments to protect the public's health. He represented NACCHO at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. He is pictured with Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA).

NACCHO President Attends Proclaims National Community Planning Month in Florida
On Monday, September 28, Dr. Swannie Jett attended the City of Sanford (Florida) Commission meeting to proclaim October 2015 as National Community Planning Month. In October 1978, the American Planning Association established National Community Planning Month to highlight the importance of planning and planners. This year's theme is Health Communities, Healthy People. The theme underscores the impact that the built environment can have on residents' health. Visit www.planning.org for more information.
